Inside Track: GAA members asked to give support to young Palestine visitors

'Drogheda Stands With Palestine' will host a walk on Saturday, 19th July.

Paddy Mathews is calling on Louth GAA members to support a walk taking place in Drogheda on Sunday next.

The former county player, whose son, Paul, is a member of the current Louth panel, is deeply involved with the Drogheda Stands With Palestine group, which is mainly comprised of GAA players, and is the driving force behind this fundraiser.

Coming to Ireland later this month are 33 young GAA Palestine team members and 14 mentors. They are undertaking a tour of the country, visiting a number of cities. One of the highlights will be a meeting with GAA President, Jarlath Burns, in Croke Park.

Their trip to Ireland offers a rare moment of freedom for the boys, who are aged between 9 and 16. It is a chance for them to heal and play, and feel supported by a wider community. The club was founded last year,” says Paddy Mathews.

He is asking those taking part on Sunday to meet at Fiddlecase Pier on Drogheda Port at 11-.45am. The 7k walk goes to Baltray and will take approximately an hour and a half. Light refreshments will be provided, and walkers are asked to wear their club or county colours.

Former Dublin All-Ireland footballer, David Hickey, who has featured on the current RTE programme, Hell For Leather, will be there to greet walkers at Baltray.

It’s a good opportunity for Louth GAA to show solidarity with young Palestinians. The money raised will go towards the visit, which we hope to make as memorable as possible for the children,” adds Paddy Mathews.
