Glyde Rangers 1-9 Lannleire 1-7

Glyde Rangers made it two wins from two in the Louth John O'Neill Sand and Gravel Division Three League after defeating Lannleire in Dunleer on Saturday evening.

The visitors put in a strong first-half showing but had to withstand a strong Lannleire revival after the break before coming away with the points.

The first half saw Glyde start on the front foot and a goal from Tadhg Kellett helped them take a healthy 1-6 to 0-4 lead into the break.

It was looking good for Rangers at that stage but things took a turn early in the second half when Glyde lost Adam Sweeney to a red card on 40 minutes to give the Dunleer men hope. It got even better for Lannleire soon after when Brendan Cassidy hit the back of the net.

However, in a game where Ciaran Sheridan and Cormac Lundon were on target, Glyde did enough to hold out and inflict a second successive defeat on Lannleire.

Glyde Rangers: Oran Matthews; Darren McKeever, Jack McKeever, Kyle Caffrey; Shane Mullany, FIachre Sheridan, Conor McCullagh, Ciaran Sheridan 0-3; Adam Sweeney, Cormac Lundon 0-2, Tadhg Kellett 1-3; Olan Crosbie, Leigh Byrne, Lee Finnegan, Oisin Lynch 0-1.

Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock 2-11 Westerns 1-5

Na Piarsaigh Blackrock picked up their first win of the Division 3 season when they came out on top away to the Westerns on Saturday evening.

The Dundalk men displayed some encouraging signs in their defeat to Nh Fionnbarra on the opening day, and they continued that form to come home with maximum points.

Goals from Ciaran Murphy and James Mahoney made all the difference as the hosts suffered their second successive loss. This game was certainly a slow burner as a cagey first half ended with the visitors leading by just 0-5 to 0-3.

However, the pace picked up in the second half as Murphy and Mahoney found the net to put their side in control, while Robbie Murphy took his tally to five points to help secure a comfortable win.

Na Piarsaigh Blackrock: Jordan Mackin; Chris Kellet, Shane Roddy, James McCartney; John Galligan, Michael Woods, Fionn Tipping; Ciaran Murphy 1-3, James Mahoney 1-1; Calum Smith, Gerry Rice, Tommy Muckian 0-1; Jamie Fealy 0-1, Robbie Murphy 0-5, Joe Woods.

St Nicholas 0-15 Cuchulainn Gaels 1-10

St Nicholas have opened their Division 3 with two wins from two following a hard-fought victory in Omeath on Saturday evening.

The visitors had the breeze at their back in the first half and used the advantage to take the lead through two-pointers from Phillip Kirwan and Shane Finegan.

Cuchulainn Gaels hit back with a goal from Cian McDonald but Paudi Downey replied with two frees. Cian Flynn added another two-pointer just before the break to have the Nicks up by one at the break, 0-9 to 1-5.

The second half was a battle of attrition with Barry Woods and Ruairí Hanlon impressing in the Nicks defence. Cuchulainn upped the pressure and took the lead at stages in the half.

Another Paudi Downey free midway through the half drew  St Nicholas back all square. With time running out Dylan Brogan pushed the Nicks ahead and a final Downey free secured the win for the Drogheda men.

Playing with the aid of a breeze in the first half, the Mitchels got early points on the board through John Bingham and Gareth Kane before the Sean’s responded with two points of their own.

The visitors extended their lead through points from Trevor Matthews, Ruairi McCann and John Bingham before a Trevor Matthews free increased the lead to 0-6 to 0-2.

The Sean’s then responded with a goal from Daniel Commins to leave it a one point game but the Mitchels hit back with two further points from Andrew Bingham and one from Jake Gillespie before a Sean’s free left the scoreline at 0-9 to 1-3 at the break.

The Mitchels controlled a lot of the ball after the restart and got a point on the board through Aaron Keely followed by John Bingham.

The Sean’s responded with a two point effort from free to narrow the gap before John Bingham got another score on the board.

The Sean’s rounded out the scoring with another two point free effort and a further point from play but the Mitchels held on for a one point win.

Nh Fionnbarra 3-13 O’Connells 1-7

Nh Fonnbarra remains among the early pace-setters in Division 3 after seeing off the challenge of neighbours O’Connells to make it two wins from two.

O’Connell’s started strong with Cian Geeney finding the net after only two minutes to give the visitors an early lead.

The Togher response was immediate as they scored a goal and a point through Jack Regan and Conor Osbourne respectively.

Although O'Connells saw Niall Conlon and Robert Quigley add two-pointers and enjoy a spell of dominance in possession, they just could not penetrate the Finbarrs rear guard to make their dominance count.

The home side took advantage with further points from Oisin Madden, Stephen O'Reilly, Chris McGlynn and Jack Butterly to lead by 1-5 to 1-4 at the break.

Despite the game still being close at the interval, Naomh Fionnbarra came into the second half with a new mentality, scoring two early goals to put the game to bed.

There were moments of individual brilliance from Stephen O'Reilly, Conor Osbourne, Jack Murtagh and captain Jack Butterly but the overall team cohesion was plainly obvious.

Goals from Stephen O'Reilly and Michael McArdle complemented points by Jack Butterly, Jack Murtagh, Conor Osbourne and Andy McCann

A two-pointer from Robert Quigley and a solitary point from Niall Conlon was all O’Connells could manage in the second period as the Barrs recorded a comfortable win.

Nh Fionnbarra: Fionn McQuillan; Jake Young, Ronan Callaghan, Stephen Doyle; Adam Hanratty, Collie McGrane, Chris McGlynn 0-1; Gary Matthews, Jack Regan 1-0; Cormac McArdle, Stephen O’Reilly 1-2, Jack Butterly; Jack Murtagh 0-3, Conor Osbourne 0-3, Oisin Madden 0-1.

Subs: Conall Clerkin for C. Geeney, Leo Walsh for E. Byrne.

Wolfe Tones 2-14 Dowdallshill 0-8

Wolfe Tones can be thankful for a 15 minute spell in the first half, where they accounted for most of the damage against an improved Dowdallshill away in St Brigid’s Park.

The visitors led 2-9 to 0-1 lead at the break thanks to that blitz and nine players getting on the scoresheet as Taidgh Rock struck the second goal after Patrick Fanning rasped home.

While the second half performance didn’t match the same energy or sharpness, Dowdallshill clawed back into the game with a stronger showing, in fact outscoring the unbeaten Tones 0-7 to 0-6 in the second period.

Eoin Maguire took the charge singlehandedly with three two-pointers but the hard work for the Drogheda men was already done.

Substitutes came in and made their mark, in particular, Eoghan Clinton again impressed, kicking two points to edge his side across the line.

Wolfe Tones: Johnny Lynch; Danny Byrne, Sean McMahon, David Bolger; Sam Kelly 0-1, Alan Fanning, Sean Mc Quail 0-1; Patrick Fanning 1-0, Mark Healy 0-1; Taidgh Rock 1-0, Dwayne Leavy 0-1, Sean Flanagan; Garrett Cooney 0-1, Joe Comiskey 0-2, Niall Smith 0-1.

Dowdallshill: Ridwan Bodunrin; Gary Corrigan, James Woods, Kevin McGonagle; Paddy McKenna, Gavin Baxter, Stephen Murray; Cathal Byrne 0-1, Justin Halley; Feidhlim O’Callaghan, Paul Flynn 0-1, Stephen Traynor; Donal Magennis, Eoin Maguire 0-6, Cian Kieran.

Subs: Danny Kerr for Stephen Traynor, Ray Campbell for Feidhlim O’Callaghan, David McCrave for Cian Kieran, and Tommy Craig for Gavin Baxter.

Nh Malachi 2-12 Annaghminnon Rovers 1-14

Nh Malachi recovered from the disappointment of losing their opening Division 3 fixture as they posted their first points of the campaign with a narrow win over Annaghminnon Rovers.

The clash in Courtbane on Saturday evening went right to the wire but in the end it was the Mals to prevail with goals from Pierce Caherty and Collie Rooney contributing to their victory.

Caherty and Stephen Kelly were in good scoring form on the night and their accuracy in the first half helped the hosts to open up a 0-8 to 0-5 lead at the break.

The second half proved to be a very entertaining affair with Annaghminnon fighting back to give themselves a real chance as a goal and some well-taken points kept them right in it until the end.

However, it was the Mals who had the edge as Caherty and Rooney raised the green flag to see their side over the line.

Nh Malachi: Conor Nicholson; David Begley, Daniel Mulligan, Conor Brady; Stephen Burns, Andrew Begley, Donal Begley 0-1; Malachy Mackin0-1, Pierce Caherty 1-3; Matty Campbell, Darren Clarke, Irla McMahon; Stephen Kelly 0-5, Kevin McShane, Collie Rooney 1-0.

Subs: Gary McShane, Sean Watters, Paul Burke, Shayne Kirk.
