Christopher Columbus' flagship replica arrives in Louth this week

During its stay in Drogheda the Nao Santa María will open its decks to visitors of all ages
The Nao Santa María, a historical replica of the flagship used by Christopher Columbus during his 1492 voyage, is arriving in Drogheda for the first time. It will be docked at Fiddle Case Pier, where it will be open to the public for visits from 17 to 26 July.
This visit marks the latest stop in its extensive 2026 European tour, which includes dozens of cities where it opens its decks to the public.
Organisers describe the Nao Santa María as “more than just a ship; it is a floating museum and a proud ambassador of the maritime, cultural and tourist heritage of the Province of Huelva (Spain). It represents the great historical oceanic expeditions that changed the course of world history—the discovery of the Americas.”
The vessel was built in 2018 by the Fundación Nao Victoria to commemorate the 525th Anniversary of the Encounter between Two Worlds. Master shipwrights constructed the 200-ton vessel in Punta Umbría (Huelva - Spain) using iroko and pine wood, strictly adhering to historical records to ensure every detail reflects the original 15th-century ship.
During its stay in Drogheda, the Nao Santa María will open its decks to visitors of all ages, allowing them to explore the ship's interior, discover life on board in the 15th century, and learn about the details of one of the greatest nautical feats ever achieved.
Tours will be available continuously from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and are aimed at the general public as well as schools and groups wishing to book organized group visits.
