New Parish Priest

WELCOME to Fr Paul Clayton-Lea who has taken up the position of Parish Priest in the parish of Tallanstown, Reaghstown and Clonkeen and is now resident in the Parochial House in Reaghstown. Wildgoose Lodge. LOOKING down from the vantage point from near where the judge sits it could be an episode from The Irish RM in the old courthouse in Ardee Castle on Saturday last with local people in period clothes; only this was far from comedy. It was the enactment of the trial of Patrick Shanley, Philip Conlon Michael Tiernan for disturbances caused by them at Wildgoose Lodge, Reaghstown in that fateful year of 1816. And when the judge put on the black cap at the end of the trial to pass sentence of death on the three men I really felt a cold shiver as the actors from the famed Aclint Drama Group made the whole thing seem so palpably real. The events portrayed here were of course the catalyst for two years of terror in the Reaghstown area and further afield with the savagery of the Ribbonmen only surpassed by that of the authorities of the time. In the coming months it is intended to film the burning of the lodge and the death of all those inside followed by the trials, execution of a further 18 men and the gibbeting of their bodies at various vantage points in that part of Co Louth. It is all part of the Louth Land of Legends event and should cause quite a bit of stir in the area over the summer.
