Tidy Towns

The Annual General Meeting of the village’s Tidy Towns Committee was held last Tuesday night in the community centre, attended by the usual dedicated personnel. Secretary, Mary McDonnell gave a comprehensive report on the last year’s activities and the Treasurer reported a hefty balance in the bank, but a number of outstanding bills had to be paid which would eat into funds. Also it may be necessary to purchase a new lawn mower so with this in mind fund raising is of utmost importance. This will start with a Table Quiz next Friday night (7June) in Sarks Lounge. Your support for this would be appreciated. The out-going officers were re-elected.

New Event

To help promote better interest towards the Tidy Towns, a competition confined to the village is being proposed. This will take the following format: Best Estate, Best Garden in an Estate, Best Garden outside an Estate and Best Presented Business Premises. There will be three awards in each of the four categories, Winner, Runner-Up and Highly Commended. Entry forms will be available in Murphy’s and Finnegan’s from next week and entry will be free. A closing date for entries will be set and depending on the interest shown will result in the competition going ahead or not.

St. Mochtas

With Louth progressing to the second round of the Leinster Championship the Division Two team has no immediate fixtures but the second division continued its winning ways with a comprehensive win last week against Na Piarsiagh in their Division 4C League. This win secures the team of a top four place and a semi-final even if they lose their two remaining games.

Continuing our look at the underage teams, the U/10’s who are mentored by John O’Flaherty and Peter Lawless recently took part in a blitz in St. Mochtas Park with Tallanstown, Westerns and Brides. Also competing, St. Moctas won one, drew one and lost one of their three games and an enjoyable evening was had by all. The U/10’s train on Thursday nights at 6.30pm. and new members are always welcome.

Unfortunately in the U/12 section, there is not enough players to field a team, but they will shortly play in an U/13 competition where the U/12’s will get games. Butcher Rooney looks after this squad.

The U/16 team won their third game out of four last week when they beat St. Joseph’s. Best for St. Mochtas were Stephen McCooey and Dion Conlon.

School Extension

On Friday 14, Martin and our school will be given its new name, St. Mocta’s N.S. (Scoil Mhochta Naofa). There will also be a concelebrated mass with Archbishop Martin as chief celebrant as well as a reception in the school hall after the opening. A schedule of the day will be in next week’s
