The Birches is appealing to the public to support its annual Alzheimer's Tea Day fundraiser, which takes place this Saturday (May 11th) at its day care centre from 11am to 2pm.

Over the last 30 years, the Tea Day has raised €10 million to help support people living with dementia across Ireland, along with their families and carers.

It is estimated that 1,603 people are living with dementia in Louth.

The North Louth branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) was set up 27 years ago and has service users ranging in age from their 50s to mid 90s. In total, it supports approximately 180 people every month.

The Birches day care centre on the Priorland Road operates five days a week and its day centre at Rath Abbey in Grange caters for members from the Cooley Peninsula on a weekly basis.

The success of its Saturday Social Club has seen the monthly get together (on the third Saturday of the month from 11am - 1pm) move to St. Gerard's Hall, St. Alphonsus Road.

It also provides Daycare At Home and in addition to providing telephone support to everyone on the waiting list, The Birches also provides a monthly family support group meeting (on the last Thursday of the month at 7pm).

Those interested in obtaining more information about our services, or volunteering with us at the Saturday Social Club or who would like to help our members in the garden or with arts and crafts can contact the centre at 042 9351388.
