Temperatures set to plummet as low as -5 as Met Éireann issues ice warning

Very cold with frost, ice and some wintry precipitation on the way

Met Éireann have issued a nationwide Yellow Warning as temperatures are set to plunge to below freezing.

The warning has advised motorists in particular to take care on the roads as ice and freezing fog are expected over the coming weekend.

The warning is in place from 6pm today, Thursday November 30 and is in place until 12pm on Friday, but conditions over the weekend are set to be very cold with frost and ice developing.

Tonight will be very cold with a widespread sharp to severe frost and icy stretches. Dry and clear across most areas for a time tonight.

However, some scattered showers will move into west Connacht and west Ulster, as well as along parts of the East Coast, a few of hail and sleet, with a dusting of snow possible over higher ground. Lowest temperatures of 0 to minus 5 degrees. Some mist and fog possible too, in light variable breezes.

On Friday morning, frost, ice, and any mist or fog will gradually clear. The first day of the meteorological winter will be very cold with some scattered showers, these mainly affecting the north and west, a few of hail and a chance still of a little sleet over higher ground.

It'll be a bright day though with plenty of sunshine. Highest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees in just light variable breezes.

While most areas will be dry and calm, some showers of sleet and snow will occur, mainly across the northwest on Friday night. Very cold with lowest temperatures of 0 to - 4 degrees with a widespread sharp frost and icy patches. Mist and fog in parts too.

Another cold day with frost, ice and a light dusting of snow locally to begin on Saturday. Most areas will be dry for daylight hours, with any wintry showers mainly along north and west coasts. Highest temperatures of just 2 to 6 degrees in light west to southwest breezes.

During Saturday evening and night, some scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will move in off the Atlantic, possibly turning wintry in places. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees.

Latest indications suggest Sunday will be wet and breezy weather will move up across the country from the southwest. Coldest in the north with milder weather possibly moving up from the south.

Less cold into next week with rain or showers, but with uncertainty to the detail.
