Former Dundalk FC midfielder on the scoresheet, but Ireland thumped by Wales in their Nations League opener

Former Dundalk FC midfielder Shaun Williams scored his first goal on his second appearance for the Republic of Ireland senior team tonight.

However, the strike counted for little as Wales handed Martin O'Neill's charges a 4-1 hiding in their Nations League group opener in Cardiff.

The Millwall man was introduced for Aston Villa's Conor Hourihane just before the hour mark, by which point Ireland were four goals in arrears having trailed 3-0 at half-time.

His goal came on 66 minutes when he dispossessed Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey about 20 yards from goal before nonchalantly chipping over the outrushing Wayne Hennessey.

Another ex-Lilywhite, Daryl Horgan came off the bench for the Irish.
