Dundalk Grammar School's junior rugby team will contest the Leinster Rugby Schools Duff Cup Final after they overcame the challenge of Gormanstown College on Tuesday afternoon, by a score of 19-7, scoring three tries in the process.
The boys from DGS will now face CBS St Marys from Enniscorthy in the showpiece final to be played at Donnybrook Stadium. The school will enjoy a big day out at the Dublin venue next week as both senior and junior sides play cup finals in what is bound to me a very memorable double header.
The Junior side, led by Mr Enda Murphy and Mr Alan Norton, showed their mettle to overcome a well drilled and physical Gormanstown College side at Ashbourne RFC's Milltown Road venue.
Despite the Beast From The East And Storm Emma both thwarting the preparations for DGS' youngsters in the run into the semi-final, they still could call upon their hard work ethic and organisational structures which have been a feature of their season to date
While Gormanstown College posed a strong and physical threat, Dundalk Grammer took an early lead and despite the opposition making gains into DGS territory several times during the game, some heroic defending by the Grammar Boys ensured there was no way through.
Right at the death - with just 90 seconds remaining on the clock - captain Harry O'Neill crossed the try line to confirm the 19-7 win, the Dundalk side outscoring their opponents from Co. Meath.
11 members of Dundalk's RFC youth-set up were among the DGS panel that have made the Duff Cup final, with Timmy Connolly, Aidan Kane, Charlie Murdock,Tom Corcoran, Jonah Power, Joshua O’Hare, Aodhan Fitzpatrick, Gavin Meally, Aaron Spaight,Sam Dawson, Luke Andrews Walsh all playing key roles.
Next Wednesday's (March 14th) Donnybrook Stadium double header will be especially of interest for two local families. Two pairs of double acts playing their part are the Connolly and the Murdock brothers.
Jack Connolly and David Murdock will line out in the the senior showpiece - the Leinster Rugby Schools McMullen Cup Final - while younger brothers Timmy Connolly and Charlie Murdock will play in the junior final, the Duff Cup Final.
'A little bit of history in the making for these two sets of brothers to line out at Donnybrook Stadium on the same day in two Finals! It will be an amazing occasion for them and we wish them our best!' a Dundalk RFC spokesperson said.
The DGS senior team will face Gorey Community School in the McMullen Cup final, having beaten Salesian College, Ardee Community School, St Marys College and Gormanstown College en route to Donnybrook.
Befoe overcoming Gormanstown in their semi-final on Tuesday, the junior enjoyed comfortable wins over Salesian College, St Finian's High School and Ashbourne CS.
