World Cup 2022: Irish public have their say on Qatar concerns and who will win this year's tournament

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup starting this weekend, iReach conducted a survey with Irish adults to find out their thoughts on this year's controversial tournament in Qatar.

The survey revealed:

  • 43% of adults of respondents plan to follow the World Cup this year. Of those who plan to follow the competition, 60% are males.
  • 10% of adults won’t follow the competition as their home county team have not qualified.
  • Nearly 2 in 3 adults (62%) think that Iran should have been banned from taking part in the World Cup as they have admitted to supplying drones and other weapons to Russia.
  • The majority (86%) of adults think there should be more transparency in how countries are selected to host future World Cups.
  • 63% of adults think financial transparency is important when protecting the integrity of future World Cup voting to select the Host Countries and 63% think voting transparency is important. 61% think Women’s rights is important and 54% think LGBTQ+ rights are important.
  • 22% think Brazil will win the World Cup, 17% think Germany will win, 11% think France will win and 11% think Argentina will win.
  • 27% of adults will be supporting Wales during the World Cup, 26% will be supporting Brazil, 25% will be supporting England, and 23% will be supporting Spain.

Hosts Qatar kick-off the 2022 World Cup against Ecuador this Sunday, November 20.
