After several weeks of intensive training, 15 members of the Team Torres BJJ competition team made the long trek in the early hours of Sunday morning to Letterkenny in Co Donegal in order to compete in the third leg of the All Ireland BJJ League.
The event was hosted by the local club Rillon Gracie who put on an excellent show.
The bouts came thick and fast with the quality and intensity of the fights exceptional. Expectations, as well as spirits, amongst the Team Torres team were running high based on the team’s past performances, and they certainly did not disappoint when 12 of the 15 strong team obtained a podium position.
In total, they took home a combined total of five gold and seven bronze medals with the three team members who did not medal coming agonisingly close to clinching a bronze when they were narrowly beaten in the quarter finals and denied their share of the spoils.
Coaches Sebastiao Torres and Marty McLaughlin were understandably delighted with the team’s performance and felt that the arduous training by the competition team and the availability of skilled training partners was clearly paying dividends.
