Paddy Hughes always had a story or a joke or a wisecrack for all

Paddy Hughes, Bothár na Feirme, Blackrock Road and formerly of Ladywell Square. Dundalk died peacefully on October 29 2018 in Beaumont Hospital.

Paddy was the much loved husband of the late Olive (née Hoey) and devoted father of Colin and loving grandad of Rachel, Ewan, and Ben and brother of Fidelma Faulkner and the late Peggy Gribben and the late Gerry Hughes

Paddy was a dedicated teetotaller but spent a great portion of his life working behind well known local bars from the former Adelphi ballroom, McEnteggarts, Jockeys, The Queens, The Fane and The Shamrock to night clubs such as the Fairways Hotel, Ravensdale House and also The Readypenny Inn.

In all he was regarded as an accomplished barman and would always have a story, joke or wisecrack to share with customers and colleagues.

He also worked as a breadman for McCann’s, caretaker of the Dundalk Tennis Club for a number of years and a kitchen porter in the DKIT until his retirement some time ago.

His dedication to his working life was surpassed by his dedication and love to his immediate and extended family.

He lived to help with his main purpose in life his family’s well- being and happiness. Indeed, the loss of his beloved wife, Olive, earlier in the year, was a blow from which he never really recovered; the mischievous sparkle that he carried with him throughout his life, dulled by her passing.

Paddy would always have a story, a tale about times past. A chance meeting of an old friend would bring forward a tit bit of information or the sharing of a tale.

His knowledge of the town and his wide and varied career path threw up amazing anecdotes with larger than life characters from nostalgia soaked bygone days.

The birth of his grandchildren, Rachel, Ewan and Ben, extended his audience further.

His little family growing bigger only made him happier, his heart growing to fill their lives with the care and warmth that he had always shown to Olive, his son Colin and to his brother, sisters, in- laws, nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he passed through.

After reposing at his home on the Wednesday, Paddy’s remains were taken to his local church the next morning for Requiem Mass. Father John Hand SM of the Holy Family Parish was the celebrant.

The Readings were given by his nephews, David Hughes and Darren Gribben

Prayers of the Faithful were led by nephews, Stephen Faulkner and Stephen Leavy, along with his nieces, Lisa Gribben, Yvonne Hughes and Brenda Roddy.

The Offertory Procession was provided by his sister, Fidelma Faulkner and niece, Marie Murchan.

Burial took place in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery.

The Month's Mind Mass for Paddy will take place on Sunday, December 2 2018 at 11am in The Church of the Holy Family
