Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist was killed in a road crash in County Monaghan.

The fatal incident, involving a car and a motorbike, happened on the R190 at Lisnalong, close to the Cavan border in the west of the county, at around 1.20pm on Monday.

"The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to the mortuary at Cavan General Hospital," said a garda spokesperson.

The R190, between Ballybay and Cootehill, was closed for a time to allow for the scene to be examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. It has since re-opened and the diversions have been lifted.

Gardai say the local coroner has been notified and that arrangements will be made for a post-mortem examination to be carried out on the man's body.
