Louth LGFA star Kate Flood was honoured as the TG4 Ladies Football Junior Players’ Player of the Year at the All-Stars Awards banquet in the Bonnington Hotel on Saturday night.

The accolade brings to a close a landmark season for the St Patrick’s sharpshooter, who lifted the All-Ireland Junior title and bowed out of inter-county football.

Flood, who previously claimed the same award in 2018, reflected on what the achievement means to her.

She said: “I suppose, obviously, for me, announcing that I'm retiring, it was just something very extra special this year, the fact that we were able to get the win, and I could retire on a high.”

When asked what the secret was to her four goals and 28 points across the campaign, Flood remained modest.

“I don't know. A bit of luck, I think. I suppose in training, Ryan and I come up against really good defenders, and they've obviously helped me with my attacking ability, and I just seem to know what the net is.”

The Players’ Player of the Year award is decided by opponents rather than teammates, and Flood was grateful to receive the award.

“Definitely. It's always nice to be nominated, and then it's obviously an extra special then to obviously win it. But yeah, it's great to see that other players around the country then appreciate what you put into the game.

“I suppose my first love was Gaelic since I started off at club (level), and I went to Australia for a year, but I had to always come back and finish with the Gaelic.

“We celebrated for a while, probably too long. But it's great. And each year, the support keeps growing year in, year out. And it's amazing to see.”
