The Joes set the foundation for this win with an excellent first-half performance that saw them go in at halftime leading by 2-8 to 0-1. The Joes duo of Conall Smyth and Oisin McGuinness led the Joes scoring in the opening salvo.

McGuinness with a point in the first minute, quickly followed by a Smyth point. A further move saw McGuinness set up Smyth to palm the ball to the net early on.

Mattock Rangers found it difficult to break through a well organised Joes defence with turnovers from Michael O’Brien and Rian Devlin.

The Joes hit a second goal when McGuinness raced through to drive a low shot across the face of goal to the left corner of the net.

It was impressive Conall Smyth who finished the first half scoring to send the Joes in leading 2-8 to 0-1 at the break.

Alan Quigley crashed the ball to the net following a superbly weighted pass over the top from Gabriel Bell to seal the game.
Cathal Fleming kept the Mattock scoreboard ticking as he was unerring with three pointed frees.

Substitute Stephen Smith in the Mattock goal who made a number of fine saves, denying the Joes on numerous occasions.

GROUP B

ST. FECHINS 0-10 ROCHE EMMETS 1-5

St. Fechins recovered from a half-time deficit to claim victory at home to Roche Emmets in the Paddy Sheelan Cup clash on Sunday morning.

This Group B encounter was in the balance throughout the 60 minutes but in the end it was the hosts who shaded it with the help of eight points from Ryan Walsh.

It was the home side that opened proceedings with a pointed free from Ryan Walsh, only for Roche to hit back with a Mark Byrne goal, followed by a point from play.

The visitors added two further points before the interval but St Fechins remained very much in the game as scores from Walsh and Danny Burnell cut the gap to 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.

Both sides were guilty of a number of wides in the opening 10 minutes of the second half before Emmets pointed from a free through Barry O’Hare which he then followed up by another from a placed ball at the 15-minute mark.

Fechins had yet to score at this stage but with a number of substitutions they got off the mark with a point from sub Matthew Flanagan followed by three more from placed balls from Ryan Walsh to put them back in the lead. It got even better just before the end of the first quarter when Ben Callanan added a second goal to make it 2-4 to 0-1.

Darren Connor struck first but when Ryan Ward at full forward for Rovers hit the net early it looked like it was going to be a home win. Conor Grogan quickly cancelled that effort and the visitors never looked back.

It was double scores at the break, Cian Matthews in goals could do nothing to stop Aidan McCann from making it 2-4 to 1-2. As the subs rolled on for the Lordship men they got even stronger.

Joe Connor wrapped things up in a fragmented second half with the Pats clinching goal. Dean Burns did chip in with a couple of scores but there would be no denying the green and white men.

The visitors were quickly off the mark through Peter Nixon before Liam McStravick took centre stage. The full forward landed two points and a two-pointer before claiming the opening goal from the penalty spot on 15 minutes.

Soon after Jordan O’Donoghue found the net to put his side 2-3 to no score in front. The Mochtas finally came to life with a point from Declan Byrne on 18 minutes and a two-pointer from the same player helped cut the gap to 2-4 to 0-7 at half time.

McStravick added a second goal from a penalty on 37 minutes but a Gerry Garland goal on 39 minutes put the Louth Village side right back in the contest.

The Drogheda men went into the game hoping to bounce back from their midweek defeat to St Brides, but despite leading by seven points at the break they were unable to complete the job and Kilkerley hit back to claim victory.

The Blues made their intentions clear as they kicked the opening two points and they pushed on to lead by 0-6 to 0-2 with Rian Hand and Micheal Begley registering for the visitors.

Cormac Mallon and Luke Shevlin added points for the Emmets but the hosts finished strongly with a late goal from Eoin McCoy to lead by 1-8 to 0-4 at halftime, with Ross Nally also among the points.

The visitors raised their game at the start of the second half and cut the gap to a point with three apiece for Fionn Cumiskey and Begley. It looked as if the Drogheda men would regain control when they added two goals in quick succession.

STABANNON PARNELLS 2-12 COOLEY KICKHAMS 2-12

In the proverbial game of two halves, both sides took a share of the spoils on Friday night in the heart of mid Louth. Stabannon dominated the first half with Dylan Shevlin in fine form, inside in the full forward line.

Bagging two goals but his replacement in the second half could be pointed to their wayward second half showing. Leading 2-9 to Cooley’s 0-5 at the turn Parnells tried to hold on.

Cian Connor kept his side in touch in those lean periods but it took a Kickhams replacement to get them back on level terms.

Enter Patrick Johnston, the nippy forward barrelled home two goals to lead the revival and allowed Cooley to take something home. The draw was Parnells first point in Group C.

However, that was not used as an excuse with Sean Marry leading the charge. A first-half goal from Tom O’Connell gave the intermediate champions the edge 1-6 to 0-5 at the turn and they used that game to manage the second half expertly.

Going point for point, the two sides were well-matched in the second half Dylan McKeown’s accuracy ensured there would be no Knockbridge comeback either.

Geraldines made it two wins inside a week as they followed when they proved too strong for Clan na Gael on Sunday morning.

Goals from John McCrohan and Ryan Traynor did the trick for the visitors along with an impressive tally of nine pointed frees from Jim McEneaney.

The Gers took a grip of the game from the opening exchanges and it was McCrohan who grabbed the first goal of the day to help his side lead by 1-13 to 0-7 at the break.
