ST. JOSEPHS 3-10

YOUNG IRELANDS 0-6

St Josephs remain joint top with Hunterstown in Division 2 after seeing off the challenge of Young Irelands at home on Saturday night. It was the Joes who started brightly with points from Oisin McGuinness followed by an effort from Pearse Grimes Murphy.

The visitors found it difficult to break through a well organised Joes defence, but opened their scoring from a Jordan O’Donoghue 20m free before the end of the first quarter.

The sides then exchanged points with Ben Collier from play and a Jordan O’Donoghue free for the Young Irelanders. Conall McCaul then hit two brilliant long range scores to stretch the Joes lead to 0-5 to 0-2 on 25 minutes and the Joes finally unlocked the visitors defence on 27 minutes when a perfectly weighted ball over the top was flicked over the advancing keeper by Alan Quigley to raise the first green flag of the game.

In the closing minutes the sides exchanged long range points with Conall McCaul and Peter McStravick both on target with excellent points to leave the Joes ahead by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.

In an end-to-end third quarter the Young Irelands from the throw in attacked down the right with Jack Watters firing over a fine score from wide right in the first minute. The Joes responded immediately when the heavily bandaged Killian McDonnell made his way forward to setup Pearse Grimes Murphy for another excellent score.

Jack Watters and Grimes Murphy exchanged scores at the start of the second half and on 34 minutes Gabriel Bell collected the ball deep in defence, as the space opened up Bell raced forward to find the net.

A long range Young Irelands free narrowed the margin before Pearse Grimes Murphy turned provider when his pass inside was confidently palmed to the net by Cormac Marmion to give the Joes a 3-7 to 0-5 lead at the end of the third quarter. The result was never in doubt after that score and the Joes went on to complete a 13-point win.

HUNTERSTOWN ROVERS 0-14

ST. BRIDES 0-11

It was the table-toppers who took on the hosts, St Brides, at Knockbridge on Saturday evening in Division 2 in a match that was extremely competitive throughout. In the end it was the visitors who came out on top to remain top.

Hunterstown got their noses in front early in the first half, and it was in the second quarter when they dominated the game and outscored the hosts by 0-4 to 0-2. They eventually went in at the break with a four point advantage.

Brides went down to 13 men for a period of time in the second half with a player receiving two yellow cards and another receiving a black card, but they battled extremely hard in this period. Each team exchanged points throughout the second half, but the hosts could not close the four-point gap that the visitors built up prior to halftime.

Hunterstown were more clinical in front of goals, with the county man, Ryan Burns, kicking eight points. Jason Monaghan, Daithi Carroll and Euan Woodlock were also on target for the winners. Sean Marry led the charge for the Brides with six points while Jarleth Cassidy, Daniel McArdle and Nathan Kirk were also on target.

STABANNON PARNELLS 2-11

LANNLEIRE 2-6

Sean Reynolds came off the bench to inspire a Stabannon comeback as they secured a five-point win over Lannleire in Dunleer. The Louth U-20 star bagged two goals as his side recovered from an eight point interval deficit to inflict a defeat that sees the hosts remain rock bottom of Division 2.

The Dunleer men were in fine form in the first half and found the net through a Paul Callan penalty and Darragh Malone, while Liam Callan and Jason Torris also got in on the scoring act. Parnells struggled to make any real impact and at the break the home side held a very healthy 2-6 to 0-4 advantage.

However, it all changed in the second half as the visitors took total control of proceedings. The brace from Reynolds was the inspiration for the revival, while Harry Butterly’s seven point haul was also instrumental. The Lannleire challenge faded dramatically after the restart and they were unable to add to their first half tally.

Kilkerley Emmets continued their pursuit of the top two in Division 2 thanks to this nine-point win away to Clan na Gael on Saturday. The visitors appeared to have the edge for much of the game and made their superiority count as the finished with a deserved victory. The only goal of the game from Michael Kirby helped them on their way.

The first was a competitive affair as the Emmets had points from Cormac Mallon and Ewan McEnteggart, along with Kirby’s goal. However, the Clans kept in touch and levelled at 1-2 to 0-5 on 20 minutes.

Although the Clans edged ahead, Kilkerley upped the pace and had scores from Brian Brady, Micheal Begley, Fionn Cumiskey and Cathal Bellew to lead by 1-6 to 0-6 at the short whistle.

The second period was a rather one-sided affair as the hosts failed to add to their tally, while Kilkerley extended the lead with scores from Tadhg McEnaney (3), Cumiskey (2) and Daniel McKeown.

Cian Callan opened the scoring for the hosts before Sam Kenny levelled matters. That was the pattern for much of the first half with Ian O’Reilly on target for the Emmets and Lee Crosbie replying at the other end.

However, the decisive score arrived in first half injury time when Grimes got through for the first goal to put his side 1-5 to 0-5 ahead at the break. The second goal followed nine minutes after the restart and at that stage the visitors looked on course for a comfortable win.

However, with Crosbie continuing to impress and further points coming from Cameron Maher and Patrick Clarke, the Kevins got right back into contention. A 59th minute point from Diarmuid Cullen proved to be the winner as a the hosts just came up short.
