A 27 year old man who stole a van after taking it for a test-drive was told at Dundalk district court last week that he is facing a 10 month sentence or 200 hours community service.

Martin Ward with an address at Castleross, Castletown Road, Dundalk was charged with theft arising out of the incident at a business premises on Coe’s Road, Dundalk on the 21st of September last year.

The court heard a price had been agreed during the test drive and the accused had dropped off the vendor claiming he’d be back with the money - but never returned.

The Defence solicitor said the accused was ashamed, and wanted to pay compensation to the owner of the vehicle.

He said his client is a father of two children with another on the way and while he had a number of previous convictions the last one was in March 2011.

He added the defendant is due to begin 120 hours community service this week.Judge Flann Brenann noted that the offence happened over a year ago and the accused had not “paid a penny” since.

He adjourned the case until the 9th of January so a community service report could be prepared.
