Housing commencements rose in January in Louth with work beginning on 101 new homes
House construction in Louth began 2026 on a positive note with an increase in the number of homes on which construction began, compared to the previous number of months, according to the latest data released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Work began on 101 new houses in Louth in January, up from 12 in December 2025 and 15 in November. It is also up significantly on January 2025 when work began on 10 homes in the county.
Of the 101 new houses, three were one off houses and 98 were scheme houses, or in other words, part of a multi-unit development.
While January saw an improvement in the number of houses being started, there was no improvement in the number of apartments being commenced however, with no new apartments being commenced in January, and November being the last month in which work began on any in Louth, when five were commenced.

Work began on just 13 apartments in Louth in the whole of last year, down massively on the 850 which commenced in 2024.
Nationally, work began on 2,046 new homes in January. It is down from 3,065 in December 2025, but up on 1,183 in January of last year.
Of the 2,046 new homes, 1,311 were scheme units, 216 were one off units, and 519 were apartments.
Of all units commenced in January 2026, 302 units were in the four Dublin local authorities. By Local Authority, the most units commenced were in Waterford City and County, with 409 units, followed by Meath County with 307, and Cork County with 159.
