Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) graduates now have the opportunity to take part in future Seanad Éireann elections through the newly expanded Higher Education constituency.

For the first time, graduates beyond the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin are able to participate in this element of our democratic process — a significant expansion of electoral rights for third-level alumni.

Following important changes to the rules for electing University Members of Seanad Éireann, voting rights for the six university seats have been extended to graduates from all designated higher education institutions across Ireland, including DkIT.

This means that, if you meet the eligibility criteria, you can register to vote and have a voice in shaping Ireland’s Upper House in future elections. The deadline for registrations is the 26th February 2026.

You are eligible to register to vote in future Seanad elections if you:

  • Are an Irish citizen
  • Are 18 years or older
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (honorary degrees, certificates, or diplomas do not qualify)
  • Graduated from DkIT (or other designated institutions)
