Monaghan County Council has said that is on track to deliver 97 new social and affordable homes across the county in 2026, which it said strengthens its commitment to increasing housing supply and meeting local need.
Construction is currently underway on 58 homes across several active sites, according to the local authority, with additional housing projects are scheduled to progress to the construction phase in the months ahead.
Alongside new builds, the Council said it will also continue strategic acquisitions and leasing activity throughout the year. In total, these combined measures will add 102 homes to the county’s housing stock by the end of 2026, ensuring Monaghan meets, and is positioned to exceed, it said, its targets under Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2026–2030.
The programme it added, reflects the Council’s "sustained focus on delivering high‑quality homes for individuals and families across County Monaghan".
The progress follows a strong year in 2025, during which the Council delivered 113 additional homes — surpassing its Government‑set target by more than 80%.
Significant advancement was achieved on two major Council‑owned sites at Latlorcan and Mullaghmatt in Monaghan town, where 51 and 21 homes respectively are being constructed by GEDA Construction. Much of this work is being carried out by local subcontractors and suppliers, including IJM Timber Engineering, with Craftstudio Architects leading the design.
Affordability and housing choice also featured prominently in 2025. The Council launched the county’s first Affordable Purchase Scheme, delivering 10 new homes at Station View in Monaghan Town.
The first Cost Rental Scheme in County Monaghan also became available, providing 16 apartments in Monaghan Town. In Carrickmacross, 10 Affordable Purchase homes are currently being built, and will be made available to qualifying applicants on lower to middle incomes in the coming months.
Monaghan County Council Chief Executive Robert Burns acknowledged the scale of the organisation’s efforts and the collaboration behind recent progress. “Huge credit goes to our excellent Housing team, who remain focused on delivery and community enhancement,” he said.
“Working closely with our Elected Members, residents, communities and housing delivery partners including Approved Housing Bodies, developers and contractors, we will continue to innovate, deliver and be ambitious in providing social and affordable homes, fostering sustainable communities and supporting the social and economic needs of our growing county.”
Olga McConnon, Director of Housing, highlighted the scale of delivery achieved to date under the Housing for All programme:“Over the lifetime of the Housing for All plan 2021-2025, we have built 529 homes, acquired 74, and leased 79 properties for social housing.
"These homes now provide secure accommodation for 682 individuals and families. Our focus remains on delivering high‑quality, sustainable homes and building communities that meet the needs of people across the county.”
As part of the Council’s week-long Housing Focus, this update highlights the ongoing collaboration and investment that support the delivery of secure, modern homes countywide.
