Fall in planning permissions for apartments in Louth continues

Fall in planning permissions for apartments in Louth continues according to CSO data

The fall in the number of apartments being granted planning permission in Louth has continued to fall according to the latest data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Planning was granted for 51 apartments in Louth in the third quarter (Q3) of this year, down from 92 in the second quarter (Q2). It is also down from 121 in the same quarter of last year.

Planning permission was granted for 181 apartments in Louth in the first three quarters of this year. This compares to 722 during the first three quarters of last year.

The number of houses granted planning permission in the third quarter of this year has also fallen, with planning granted for 146 houses, 50 of which were one off houses, and 96 were multi development houses.

It is down from 260 houses in the previous quarter, when planning was granted for 44 one off houses and 216 multi development houses.

Nationally, there was an increase of 29.4% in the total number of dwelling units approved in Q3 2025 to 11,142 units, up from 8,611 units when compared with Q3 2024. This was the highest number of units approved since Q4 2023, when 11,181 units were granted planning permission.

Houses accounted for 55% of all dwelling units granted planning permission in Q3 2025, while apartments made up the remaining 45%.

In Q3 2025, the number of apartments granted planning permission rose by 51.2% when compared with Q3 2024, while house approvals increased by 15.7%.

The number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission was up by 14.0% annually, from 4,101 units in Q3 2024 to 4,676 units in Q3 2025.

The number of one-off houses receiving planning permission in Q3 2025 rose by 21.6%, up from 1,192 units in Q3 2024 to 1,450 units in Q3 2025.
