The Dundalk Famine Graveyard Association is making an appeal to the local community to support a GOFUNDME fundraiser, it has set up to raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the Sidella Greenway, a 1.5–2km lane that runs past the Dundalk Famine Graveyard.
This laneway was historically significant, serving as a route into Dundalk town in the 1800s, including for the procession of bodies from the Dundalk Workhouse to the paupers' graveyard in Killally (now known as the Dundalk Famine Graveyard).
The graveyard was established in 1853 and continued in use until 1912. It was utilised primarily for those persons who died within the workhouse (now demolished) on the Ardee Road. The graveyard has been restored by local volunteers.
The Sidella Greenway is rich in wildlife and features St. Clare’s Well, a holy well discovered recently, which is locally known to have cured a dog years ago. Access to the greenway is via the brown laneway gate at A91E76N.
The Dundalk Famine Graveyard Association hopes that the success of this campaign will support efforts to maintain other local amenities and greenways in the area.
