Louth Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn has called for renewed support and measures to revitalise Drogheda’s historic Saturday market at Bolton Square, one of the town’s oldest traditions, running since the 1880s.

Following a visit to the market at the invitation of local traders, Senator Comyn described how the once-bustling weekend fixture could once again become a vibrant hub of local life with just a few key improvements.

“I remember this market from when I was growing up – it was absolutely packed every Saturday morning and a real cornerstone of community life in Drogheda. Times have changed, but the market still has huge potential. Local producers are doing their best, and with a bit of help, we can bring it back to life.”

In her correspondence to David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Senator Comyn suggested several small but impactful changes that would enhance the market’s visibility and functionality, including:

  • Preventing overnight car parking in designated trading spaces

  • Improved signage around the town to highlight market hours

  • A placemaker sign recognising the market’s history

  • Incentives to attract new stallholders, particularly food and coffee trucks

She welcomed the positive response from Mr Conway, who confirmed his intention to visit the market in the coming weeks and expressed interest in exploring temporary use of the nearby areas as additional markets or event spaces.

“I’m really encouraged by the Council’s response. With just a bit of vision and support, Drogheda’s market could be a local gem once again – supporting small traders, creating footfall in the town centre, and celebrating our town’s heritage.”

Senator Comyn gave her continued commitment to local economic development and protecting Drogheda’s cultural assets

“Markets like this aren’t just about commerce, they’re about connection, community, and local pride. I’ll keep working with the Council and the traders to make sure Drogheda’s market has the future it deserves.”
