Louth County Council offices in Dundalk
Louth councillors have been informed that the Dundalk Athletics Track will not now be completed this year, due the technical requirements of the synthetic surface installation that require consistent temperatures above 12°C to cure properly, and its installation will now scheduled for late April to early May 2026.
Councillors were told this week that: "Following on from Louth County Councils decision earlier this year to upgrade the track from a cinder surface to a high-quality synthetic surface, it has now become clear that the programme of works cannot be completed within the current calendar year.
"This delay is primarily due to the technical requirements of the synthetic surface installation. The materials involved, specifically the pore sealer and self-levelling compound, require consistent temperatures above 12°C to cure properly. Attempting installation during the colder autumn months would risk surface defects and invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
"Additionally, the materials have a limited shelf life and must be stored above 10°C, which is not feasible during the winter. For these reasons, the contractor has recommended that installation be scheduled for late April to early May 2026, when weather conditions are more favourable."
Commenting on the announced delay, Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr Robert Nash, said to the Dundalk Democrat that, "obviously it's disappointing that the project is going to be delayed but the synthetic surface of the athletics track is one of the most important parts of this development and it's vitally important that the right procedures are followed to ensure that the surface stands the test of time and the validation of the manufactures warranty is guaranteed."
Cllr Nash added, "we all want to see at long last athletics track delivered for the people of Dundalk, but I know people will understand the importance of proper procedure being followed."
