The entrance to Muirhevnamor Park from Hoey's Lane in Dundalk
Louth County Council has been asked to carry out an assessment of Muirhevnamor Park in Dundalk, to make it safer and more accessible, ahead of the opening of the new Dundalk Athletics Track.
The matter was raised at the Louth County Council September meeting by Cllr Maeve Yore. Cllr Yore asked for an audit and assessment of the park as it was in need of some work ahead of the opening of the new athletics track, including work on footpaths, new benches and a tidying back of some of the hedges.
Replying to Cllr Yore, Acting Director of Services, Operations and Environment Delivery, David Hanratty said that such audits were carried out as part of the Council's ongoing work but added that he would pass on the request about benches and works to the Parks Team.
Cllr Kevin Meenan also raised security and safety at the park at the September meeting, asking that CCTV be reactivated at the park. Cllr Meenan said that the park had CCTV installed a number of years ago at quite a big expense at the time, and asked that it be reactivated.
The Sinn Féin councillor added that some areas in the park are overgrown and asked it be looked at to make it safer for people, as quite a lot of people who used to walk the park have stopped doing so, further adding that an assault took place there during the summer, but luckily An Garda Síochana caught the suspect.
Replying to Cllr Meenan, Mr Hanratty said they would be discussing with the Community section, the overall use of the park and the land adjacent to it, to see how it would work going forward with the new athletics track.
