Louth councillors to hear from three people seeking Presidential Election nomination
Louth County Council has invited three candidates who are seeking a nomination for the upcoming Presidential Election to present at a Special Meeting of the Council.
Candidates Nick Delehanty, Keith McGrory, and Gareth Sheridan each secured the required support of two local councillors to be considered as a potential nominee.
Louth County Council added that the invited candidates must confirm their attendance and submit documentation confirming their eligibility before 12:00 noon on Friday, 19th September.
The Special Meeting will take place on Monday 22 September 2025 at 6:30pm, in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Dundalk.
Councillors had been told at the Louth County Council September meeting on Monday, that 27 people were seeking a nomination from Louth County Council to run in the Presidential election. They had until 5pm on Tuesday to be nominated and seconded by a Louth councillor, in order for them to be considered by the local authority.
While the three candidates are now in with a chance to get the nomination from Louth councillors, this does not necessarily mean that Louth councillors will definitely nominate a candidate.
Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Seán Kelly, told the Dundalk Democrat on Monday that, “there's every possibility that we'll take in three or four people next Monday and decide not to vote for any of them – but we're giving them the opportunity because we believe in democracy here.”
