Ciaran Mullooly MEP for Independent Ireland visited Louth recently. While in Dundalk, Mr Mullooly held a meeting with local housing agencies, estate agents and local people who are on Louth County Council`s housing list for a very long period of time, and to examine the key policy changes now needed to cope with the housing shortage in Dundalk going forward.
After the consultation, which was held in The Gateway Hotel, Mullooly said: "One lady who attended the meeting spoke about her length of time on the housing list and described as to how she was living in a severely overcrowded situation, with herself and her two children (aged 8 and 3) were sharing a bedroom with her parents.
"Her parents are in a double bed, her eight year old is in a single bed and her three year old is in a playpen in the corner of the room. This is totally unacceptable and I will be raising this appalling issue on the floor of the European Parliament and also asking Louth County Council to intervene."
Afterwards Mr Mullooly then went on to meet with members of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce in the town and had an enjoyable but very important meeting with staff and residents in Curam Care Nursing Home.
Independent Ireland Representative for Louth, Ryan McKeown commented: "My team and I were delighted to host our party MEP Ciaran Mullooly in Dundalk recently where he met with and listened to people`s housing concerns.
"I know that Ciaran is passionate about his role as Vice-Chair of the Special Housing Committee in the European Parliament and I look forward to the publication of the final report in due course."
