Ann’s journey with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland began 26 years ago
Last year's Louth Alzheimer's Memory Walk

This September, Ann Shortt will once again lace up her walking shoes to lead the Drogheda Alzheimer's Memory Walk supported by Aviva —marking her sixth consecutive year at the helm of this heartfelt community event.
Taking place on Sunday, 21st September at 2pm in St Dominic’s Park, the event coincides with World Alzheimer’s Day this year, a global moment to reflect, raise awareness, and support those affected by dementia.
Ann’s journey with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland began 26 years ago, when her father was diagnosed with dementia. The local Day Care Centre in Drogheda, Louth became a lifeline—not just for her dad, who attended five days a week and adored his time there—but also for her mum, his primary carer, and the entire family. “It was a place of comfort, connection, and care,” Ann recalls. “It made a huge difference to all of us.”
After her father’s passing, Ann deepened her involvement with the Alzheimer Society, turning her gratitude into action. She became a passionate fundraiser and played a key role in the development of the new centre in Drogheda.
“I was delighted to give back,” she says. “It felt like the right way to honour my dad and support others going through similar experiences.”
Now, the Drogheda Alzheimer's Memory Walk supported by Aviva has become a cherished annual tradition. With options for a 5km or 10km route, the walk is designed for all ages and abilities, with a relaxed pace and a refreshment stop along the way.
“It’s always a lovely day out,” Ann says. “People come together, share stories, make connections, and create lovely memories.”
Ann hopes this year’s walk will be the biggest and best yet, with participants already signing up. “Memory Walk is so important,” she emphasises. “It helps raise awareness around dementia and Alzheimer’s, and it brings people together in a really meaningful way.”
Whether you're walking in memory of a loved one, supporting a friend, or simply showing solidarity, the Drogheda Alzheimer's Memory Walk supported by Aviva promises to be a powerful and uplifting event. Join Ann and the community on 21st September to walk, remember, and make a difference.
Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva honours, remembers, and celebrates the 64,000 people in Ireland living with dementia, along with their families and carers. It also cherishes the memory of those who are no longer with us.
In 2024, almost 3,500 walkers participated in Memory Walk and raised over €150,000 which helped fund vital services for people with dementia, including Daycare, Support Groups, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.
