Louth Aontú rep disgusted at random attacks on Indian people

Aontú’s Louth Rep, Michael O’ Dowd has said that he is disgusted at random attacks on Indian people, following an an attack on an Indian man in Dublin, and that these type of attacks "damage the bonds that hold our communities together".

Mr O'Dowd said that: “Random attacks on members of the Indian community in Ireland are both shameful and unacceptable. These are people who have come here to live, work and contribute to our society, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

"I am appalled, and frankly, angry at this situation. It is so unfair and unjust. We owe a great deal to the Indian community in this country. So many have been here for so long and we have lived peacefully together and that’s as it should be.

"In Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and in hospitals, clinics and care settings across Ireland, Indian doctors, nurses and carers play a vital role in keeping our health services running. Their dedication and professionalism make a real difference to patients and families every single day.

"We also enjoy lovely hospitality in the various food establishments they run ,both in Louth and up and down the country.  It is estimated there are some 90,000 Indian people living in Ireland, it is now their home, they pay taxes like everyone else, and they are entitled to live in harmony and entitled to go about their lives free from fear."

He continued: "These attacks not only harm the individuals targeted, but they also damage the bonds that hold our communities together. Everyone in Ireland, regardless of their background, should be able to walk the streets and go about their daily lives without the threat of violence.

"This is a time for us to stand together, to speak up for what is right, and to show kindness to our Indian friends, colleagues and neighbours. They deserve our gratitude, our respect and support."
