Louth County Council has issued a temporary bathing prohibition at Clogherhead Beach in what it says is a precautionary measure.

The council says it was notified by Uisce Éireann of a potential overflow at the Clogherhead Wastewater Treatment Plant. Further clarification received today has confirmed the possibility of an incident.

As a precaution, Louth County Council says that a temporary bathing prohibition will be erected at the beach this afternoon.

It added that water sampling was carried out today, and the results are expected on 24th July, at which point the situation will be reviewed.

Members of the public are advised not to swim at Clogherhead Beach until further notice.
