A new disability bike has been purchased for Bellurgan National School through a collaborative effort between local councillors and the school, marking a significant step forward for inclusive education and accessibility in the area.

Sinn Féin Councillors Fiona Mhic Conchoille and Antóin Watters worked closely with Bellurgan NS to secure funding for the bike, which will support students with mobility challenges in accessing the joy and benefits of cycling.

Cllr Mhic Conchoille said: “This is a great win for the students of Bellurgan NS and a testament to what can be achieved through partnership and working together.

"It also enables Louth Disability Cycles to bring their excellent work to more schools in the region now that Bellurgan has its own dedicated bike.”

Cllr Watters added: “We’re proud to support projects that make a real difference in children’s lives and this is about ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate, be active, and feel included. No child should miss out on the joy of riding a bike.”

The initiative was supported through the Councillor Allocation Fund and both Sinn Féin councillors have committed to pooling their allocations to secure one disability bike per year for schools in their area.

Paul Callan of Louth Disability Cycles expressed his appreciation: “I’m very grateful to Fiona and Antóin for supporting the purchase of this bike. Their backing makes a real difference in helping us reach more children and schools across Louth.”

Cllrs Watters and Mhic Conchoille extended their appreciation to Paul Callan at Louth Disability cycles and Jill at Companion Tandems and to all others involved in making this project a reality.

The Louth Disability Cycling Club meet at St Helena’s Park at 6.30pm on Wednesdays. Check their Facebook page for details.
