Louth is second most expensive county for car insurance

Louth has dropped one rank to 2nd, with an average price of €873.

Louth has been revealed as the second most expensive county in Ireland for car insurance, with motorists paying an average of €873 annually, according to new research by Chill Insurance.

Louth has dropped one rank to 2nd, with an average price of €873. Limerick has moved up one position to 3rd, with an average cost of €838. Longford ranked as the most expensive county in Ireland for car insurance, with it costing drivers an average of €1,042. 

Meanwhile, Kilkenny was revealed to be the county with the cheapest car insurance. There has been no decrease since data was last collected in March 2024, with the rate remaining at €629. 

Insurance cost typically reduces for drivers by 27% after three years of having a license. 

Among the most popular car models in Ireland, the KIA Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, and Skoda Octavia are the most affordable to insure on average.

Car insurance costs depend on a combination of factors. Insurers will look at various components including, age, the type of vehicle, job title, claims history, eircode, annual mileage, and any additions made to the car.

Living in an area with elevated crime rates and dense traffic can substantially increase car insurance costs. Home location is a key factor in how insurers calculate premiums. This is evident in Ireland, where certain rural counties command higher insurance rates due to a history of more frequent claims, despite their countryside setting.
