On the evening of Saturday 24 May, Dromiskin village came alive under the stars as Dromiskin Tidy Towns hosted a magical “Bat Walk and Talk”— an event aimed at raising awareness of local biodiversity in Louth and the important role bats play in our ecosystem.

Led by a visiting bat expert Anna Collins, the walk brought together over 30 residents of all ages who gathered at twilight at Ginnety’s Pond Nature Park. Armed with bat detectors and curiosity, attendees followed a guided tour through some of Dromiskin’s most scenic and biodiverse areas, listening in on the fascinating echolocation calls of several native bat species.

“We were thrilled with the turnout,” said Liam Reilly of Dromiskin Tidy Towns. “This event wasn’t just about spotting bats—it was about connecting people with nature, right here in our own community. Bats are an often misunderstood part of our environment, and tonight gave people a chance to learn, ask questions, and appreciate their presence.”

The event included a short talk before the walk, where attendees learned about the different types of bats found in Ireland, their habitats, and how small changes in gardening and land management can support local bat populations.

The evening also served as part of Dromiskin Tidy Towns’ broader commitment to biodiversity as part of its ongoing environmental initiatives. From pollinator-friendly planting to habitat preservation, the group continues to work toward making Dromiskin a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable village.

As the bats darted overhead and stars emerged in the sky, the event closed with refreshments and community conversation - reminding all present that small creatures can bring big inspiration.

Dromiskin Tidy Towns says it would like to thank all who attended, their guest wildlife guide, and everyone who continues to support biodiversity efforts in the village.
