Beloved Dundalk shop to close its doors after 80 years

The shop is now offering special discounts available as a thank you to its customers.

An iconic chapter in Dundalk’s retail history is coming to a close, as Sheba Boutique has announced it will shut its doors in the coming weeks after 80 years of service on Clanbrassil Street.

In an emotional post shared on Facebook, owner Jean McArdle reflected on the shop’s long-standing family legacy, which began in 1945 when her grandmother, Kitty Mulligan, opened Mulligan’s Drapery. The business was later taken over by Kitty’s daughter, Sheila, who renamed it Sheba Boutique. Since then, Sheba has become a staple of Dundalk’s town centre.

Describing the decision as “heart-wrenching and difficult,” Jean paid tribute to the generations of loyal customers who supported the boutique over the decades, many of whom became friends.

"There are no words to express how thankful we are to all our wonderful customers who have become friends. We will never forget all the love, loyalty and support you have given us throughout the years."

She continued: "Just as important were the friendships formed, the craic that was had and the many counselling sessions that took place in the fitting rooms."

The shop is now offering special discounts available as a thank you to its customers. Jean is urging anyone with gift vouchers to use them as soon as possible.

In her message, Jean expressed heartfelt gratitude to her mother, Sheila, who entrusted her with the business.

"Thank you for allowing me to be part of Sheba and then allowing me to stand on my own two feet. There really are no words to express my affection and gratitude to you."

Jean also expressed appreciation to the local business community.

"I would like to say a big thank you to all the traders in town but especially to all my neighbours on Clanbrassil Street. Dundalk is a great town with great people. C’mon the town."
