Louth Fianna Fáil TD, Erin McGreehan, has welcomed funding of up to €23 million for tourism shared destinations, including funding to facilitate the delivery of a network of trailheads, trails and water access points on the Cooley Peninsula, as part of the Government’s new Shared Island Projects.
Taoiseach Micheaìl Martin today announced that Cabinet had approved allocations from the Shared Island Fund of over €50 million for a series of new programmes to be delivered over the next five years.
Carlingford Lough is among the tourist sites in McGreehan’s native county of Louth that has been allocated funding, which she said will help further entice visitors and enhance the local community.
“I am delighted today to hear of Carlingford Lough being included in funding of up to €23 million, as part of the Shared Island Initiative. This funding is aimed at supporting the sustainable tourism development of Carlingford Lough, whilst allowing tourism agencies and local authorities to collaboratively develop the tourism around Carlingford Lough and the surrounding regions,” she said.
McGreehan also said the funding will further strengthens the areas appeal to tourists, while also enhancing it through delivery of trailheads, trails and water access points, and enhancing the experience for visitors.
“This investment will help fund the delivery of a network of trailheads, trails and water access points across the region, and increase connectivity between tourism assets, complemented by delivery of a Destination Experience Strategy to promote the region,” she added.
“I also believe this will enhance the Cooley peninsula and all of north Louth, which will be embraced by us locals, who are so lucky to be able to enjoy the beauty of our home county and where we live,” she said.
“The continuity of funding as part of the Shared Island Initiative is vital to ensure continued development of our cross-border partnerships.”
