A rescue operation in Ravensdale Forest, Co Louth, ended in tragedy as emergency responders and animal welfare volunteers were unable to save a pony trapped in a river.
On Friday, My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR) welfare team responded to an urgent call from the Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LSPCA) early in the morning. The pony had slipped down a steep ledge into the river, becoming trapped between two large rocks.
Emergency services, including Dundalk Fire Station & Rescue and An Garda Síochána, were quickly on the scene, coordinating efforts to free the animal. Despite their best attempts, the pony was found to be in a severe state of distress, suffering from shock and extensive injuries.

Rescuers ensured the pony was not alone in its final moments, providing comfort and care until the end. MLHR expressed their deep sorrow over the loss and extended their gratitude to the emergency responders who assisted in the rescue attempt.
MLHR stated: “She eventually gave up fighting and passed away, she had so many humans routing for her. She did not die alone, a kind hand on her head telling her that we loved her, everyone was truly heart broken.
“We can’t thank all the guys that went above and beyond.”
