Dundalk is mourning the loss of one of its most passionate football supporters and much-loved characters, Mark "Maxi" Kavanagh, after his passing last week.

Fans gathered on Friday evening at Oriel Park ahead of Dundalk’s match against Bohemians to honour Maxi with a large banner reading, "Maxi, Dundalk loves you more than you will know," as word of his death spread through the ground.

Maxi was a familiar face at Oriel Park for many years, deeply involved in supporting the club, especially during recent financial struggles. Known for his generosity, Maxi was a key figure in fundraising efforts to help keep the club afloat during difficult times.

A well-known local taxi driver, Maxi’s impact went far beyond football. His positivity and unwavering dedication to Dundalk FC made him a beloved figure not just in his hometown but also among League of Ireland fans across the country.

Tributes have poured in from Dundalk fans, players, and League of Ireland supporters from all over Ireland since the news of his passing. Dundalk FC posted on social media: "A town in mourning. Oriel just won’t be the same without you, Maxi. C’mon The Town."

Maxi gave local musician David Keenan his break back in 2015 when a Maxi's Taxi video of his hit song 'El Paso' went viral. Keenan said on social media: “I’m really sad to hear of the passing of Maxi Mark Kavanagh this morning. That adventure we shared together in the taxi years back will always stay with me and I’ll always be grateful to him for his encouragement. My condolences to his family and friends.”

Fans shared heartfelt messages remembering Maxi as a true legend of Dundalk. One supporter commented, "RIP Maxi, a legend of the highest order. He embodied everything this town was about." Another tribute read, "He would put others before himself and get behind any cause, football-related or not. His belief in Dundalk Football Club and the League of Ireland was unmatched. Rest in peace, Maxi."

Former Dundalk player, Brian Gartland, paid tribute to Maxi on social media, recalling him with a smile: "Maxi was always kind, supportive, and full of positivity. He was there for everyone when times were tough. He was the ultimate Dundalk FC supporter."

Even Louth rivals Drogheda United shared their sadness at Maxi’s passing, saying, "A passionate LOI man, who loved his town and football club. Our thoughts are with Maxi’s family and friends, and our neighbours in Dundalk FC at this time."

Maxi’s funeral will take place at the Holy Redeemer Church on Thursday, 3rd October at 1 pm. Following the service, the funeral procession will pass by Oriel Park on the way to St. Patrick’s Cemetery for burial. All those who knew Maxi are invited to Oriel Park afterwards. Rest in peace, Maxi. Dundalk will never forget you.
