News that regulations on the use of e-scooters under the Roads Traffic and Roads Act have been approved was welcomed
News that regulations on the use of e-scooters under the Roads Traffic and Roads Act have been approved was welcomed by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting of Dundalk JPC (Joint Policing Committee).
Councillor Maeve Yore welcomed the news saying that the legislation was much needed after a number of incidents involving the scooters nationally, while Councillor Conor Keelan asked Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern to comment on what this would mean for local policing.
In response the Chief Superintendent said that while the legislation was welcome “enforcement will be the last resort” when it comes to policing the use of the scooters.
Instead he said education with the local community would be key especially among younger people.
He said that the LifeSaver project, a road safety education program delivered by members of An Garda Síochána, was a useful tool in educating the public on the consequences of poor road safety when it came to things like e-scooters and driving under the influence.
