Fianna Fáil's Sean Kelly said he was 'elated' after he topped the poll in Dundalk Carlingford in the first count.
Kelly, who was re-elected with 1,828 votes, was hoisted onto the shoulders of his family and supporters as his re-election was announced in County Hall just before 1am on Sunday morning.
Speaking to the Dundalk Democrat, Kelly said: "I am absolutely elated, it is just a fantastic result.
“I am just really appreciative of all my family, friends and campaign team that made it possible.
"I want to thank the people of Dundalk who supported me.
“It is a fantastic result, I couldn't have ever comprehended a result like it.
"I am really grateful and am looking forward to another five years of hard work on behalf of the people."
Kelly's Fianna Fáil party colleague Andrea McKevitt was also re-elected with 1, 243 votes.
She said: “I am delighted to be re-elected. It was a long day but we got there in the end thank God.”
