Inside Track: Barry Brennan recognised for service to the GAA

Barry Brennan is pictured with three of his daughters, Sarah, Noeline and Mairéad, after being named an Louth GAA Honorary President.

Dedication to club and county over a long number of years earned Barry Brennan deserved recognition at the recent Louth Convention.

The St Kevin’s clubman was added to the list of Honorary Presidents, taking his place alongside Frank Lynch (Geraldines), Peter Brannigan (Clan na Gael), Paddy McMahon (Seán O’Mahony’s), Paddy Farrell (Knockbridge HC) and Fra Kieran (Clan na Gael).

For over six decades, Barry has been involved in the game, covering just about every role, footballer, referee, club chairman, Co Board officer and team selector, historian, and, in 1968, founder of the Baile Philib juvenile club, a unit which not only provides games for the youth of the Philipstown area, but was also been a starting point for many on future winning St Kevin’s adult teams.

In preparing their nomination proposal, the St Kevin’s club received valuable assistance from another life-long member, Nick Mackin. Sadly, Nick passed away just a few months before his colleague has won recognition.

In a tribute to Barry, the St Kevin’s club said: “His involvement with the GAA began more than 60 years ago, and from the outset he brought a rare dedication, fairness and sense of community.

Over the decades, he has carried out every role imaginable, from referee to team mentor, from club chairman to historian, from county leader to national delegate, always with the same steady commitment and deep respect of the association.”

Family members and club delegates were present at the Convention to celebrate the recognition of their colleague.
