Five-time European boxing champion Amy Broadhurst was honoured at a civic reception held in County Hall, Millennium Centre last Thursday, April 25.

Amy's family and friends from Dealgan Boxing Club, including both of her granddads, Paddy and Leslie, who are both in their eighties were there to show their support for the 22-year-old boxing ace.

A group of local councillors and representatives from Louth County Council were also in attendance.

Speaking to the Democrat Amy said: “The whole reception was amazing! The support I received from everyone, the council, my boxing club, friends and family was class.

“ The crystal they give me will sit very proudly in my sitting room. My sponsors CTI Business solutions kitted me out with some new gear for the event and my upcoming training which was amazing also.”

The event was hosted by Councillor Conor Keelan, Chairman of the Municipal District of Dundalk. Speaking at the event Cllr Keelan described Amy as “a boxing champion and great role model not only for Dundalk but for Louth and Ireland.”

Speaking on Facebook, Amy's dad Tony Broadhurst expressed how proud he was saying: “Great having Amy’s two grandads there... both in their eighties and still going strong.”

In March Amy successfully defended her European U22 boxing title after defeating Italian Rebecca Nicoli in the final. Her fifth European gold medal, the Dundalk lightweight gave a composed performance to claim run out victor in the 60kg decider on the day of her 22nd birthday.

Broadhurst saw off French and Hungarian opposition in earlier rounds of the championships in Vladikavkaz, Russia.

In February, the Dealgan Boxing Club member claimed her 17th Irish title and today's truimph builds further momentum as she bids to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Amy was also voted Dundalk's All Time Greatest in a poll created by The Dundalk Democrat.
