Plans are underway to convert the former Bank of Ireland at Park Street in Dundalk into apartments

Plans are underway to convert the former Bank of Ireland at Park Street in Dundalk into apartments, with a planning application lodged in recent days with Louth County Council.

Park Street SPV Limited has applied for planning permission for the development at 16 Park Street in Dundalk, the address of the former Bank of Ireland, which has been closed now for some years and is listed as a protected structure.

The developer is seeking the go ahead for the change of use of the existing four-storey building from offices to 13 apartments, and an extension at the lower ground floor to enclose an existing undercroft area.

The proposed apartments include four two-bedroom apartments, six one-bedroom apartments and three studio apartments.

Works planned for the building include the replacement of existing non-original windows; reinstatement of lower ground floor window at front; replacement of timber coach gates with metal gates; an AOV smoke vent above stairs; alteration to non-original railings at front; re-painting of external walls; provision of balconies at side and rear of raised ground floor level; the demolition of part of roof over side passageway at west of building; and the demolition of an external fire escape at rear.

The application also provides for alterations to existing drainage; boundary treatment; parking for bicycles; bin storage; landscaping; solar panels on rear roof; and all associated works.

A decision is due on the planning application, which is at a pre-validation stage, by 8 June 2026, with submissions due by 18 May.

16 Park Street is listed in the Louth County Council's Record of Protected Structures for Dundalk. It says in its appraisal that the building was "designed by George Halpin for Bank of Ireland, remodelled first part of twentieth century. Banded rustication and robust ashlar entrance porch create an imposing facade. Fine detailing to porch and gate piers."
