Fianna Fáíl Senator for Louth Alison Comyn has welcomed a free energy-saving service for older people in Drogheda describing it as practical and timely.

The service, coordinated by local volunteers Tony McKeown and Dave Turner, helps older people compare electricity providers, switch to cheaper tariffs, and complete all paperwork safely and correctly.

Senator Comyn, who met with Mr McKeown and Mr Turner and said "what makes the scheme so special is that it is local, it is free, and it is built entirely on trust."

“Energy prices can be very high and a lot of people stick with the same provider for years not knowing they could save money, and many older people are anxious about switching providers or dealing with complicated forms," she said.

The Fianna Fáil Senator praised the operation, calling it safe and transparent.

“Tony and Dave explained to me how carefully this service operates. There is no cold calling, no pressure to switch, and no sharing of data with energy companies. Everything is done safely, transparently, and at the individual’s pace. That reassurance matters.”

Co-founder Tony McKeown said older people are often anxious about making a mistake or being taken advantage of when trying to switch.

"We sit down with them, explain the options clearly, and we handle the phone calls and forms if needed. It is about helping people feel confident and protected,” he said.

Fellow co-founder Dave Turner explained that the service is run by local people for local people.

"There is absolutely no catch. If someone decides not to switch, that is completely fine. Our role is to give clear information and support, nothing more,” he said.

Senator Comyn said initiatives like this can make a real difference to household budgets and quality of life.

The service is available through Drogheda & District Support 4 Older People at 7 Haymarket, Drogheda (Eircode A92 H317).
Telephone 041 984 7764 or 086 377 2777.
