A parliamentary question raised by Louth TD Ruairi O'Murchu to the Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin has shed light on the release on bail of one of the men accused in the murder of Private Seán Rooney.

The news came to light on 15th November, following a Lebanese media report announcing the release of the suspect who had been in Lebanese custody.

The case against the accused individuals is set to resume in Beirut on 15 December.

In response to O'Murchu's question, the Tanaiste provided a detailed reply on the government's actions and concerns surrounding the release.

The Tanaiste revealed that the Department became aware of the release through Lebanese media and immediately initiated inquiries to confirm the facts.

The individual in question was reportedly released on bail for medical reasons, accompanied by the payment of a financial bond. The Tanaiste said that efforts are ongoing to obtain more details about the circumstances of the release.

He also said he met with the deceased soldier's mother on 20th November to provide updates on the investigation's progress.

In his statement, the Minister emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring justice for Private Rooney, asserting that he had conveyed this determination to his Lebanese counterparts and the UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

He also stated that the government has engaged the services of a Lebanese legal firm to represent Irish interests during court hearings.

The Tanaiste concluded by stating that:

“Given that this matter is now before the Lebanese judicial system, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.

“However, I can assure the House that my Department, the Embassy in Cairo, the Honorary Consulate in Beirut and I will continue to monitor developments very closely.”
