Inside Track: Glyde Rangers carry county flag

Glyde Rangers are certainly doing their home village of Tallanstown and, indeed, the county at large, proud in their first venture into provincial football.

Having won the county junior championship a number of weeks back after a whole series of near misses, the sky-blues are through to the Leinster final, having overcome Dublin title-holders, the wonderfully-named Man O War, at The Naul on Saturday last.

A Louth win over Dublin opponents? Always worth celebrating, and had St Mary’s overcome Kilmacud Crokes in the senior competition on Sunday, there would have been a Louth weekend double.

The Ardee side had been set a very difficult task, taking on the Dublin, Leinster and All-Ireland champions. They didn’t let themselves down, staging a fine rally after a shattering first half performance to be beaten by five points.

Saturday’s was Glyde’s third game in the competition. In the opening round they beat Daingean, the Offaly champions, with Ciarán Sheridan bagging a late goal. After that they then accounted for the Laois title-holders, Annanough, by two points, and now are set to meet Kildare’s Milltown in the final on Sunday week.

It’s not being made easy for the Louth champions. The final is at the Kildare training ground, Hawkfield, and this will be Glyde’s third road trip. They’ll be attempting to become the second from the county to win the title.

After St Mochta’s, St Fechin’s and Hunterstown Rovers had failed in the last match, Young Irelands did the business in 2018, beating St Brigid’s, from Offaly. They were then set a difficult task, a semi-final with Kerry champions, Beaufort.

It didn’t work out too well for Irelands, but they had the consolation of Beaufort going on to rout Sligo representatives, Easkey, in the final.
