Cllr Joanna Byrne raises concerns about lack of concrete plans to deliver four bed homes
265 people throughout the County of Louth in need of a four bedroom property have been approved onto the Local Authority Housing List but following a notice of Question tabled by Sinn Féin Councillor Joanna Byrne, it’s highlighted that a meagre 19 are projected to be delivered in the coming years; 10 in Dundalk, 9 in Drogheda, and none in Ardee.
Cllr Joanna Byrne said: “I raised this following an increase in representations for those waiting who are seeing only two and three bedroom properties being delivered throughout the County, and are starting to despair.”
Speaking at the recent County Council Meeting Cllr Byrne asked the Director of Services responsible to outline any plans to deliver additional four bedroom homes to meet the demand.
“Director, whilst I acknowledge the need for Housing in the County is predominantly two and three bed homes, there is a need for four beds as well and with a projected delivery of only 7% of what’s required, I am fearful that those waiting on this type of housing are being left behind.
“Can you please outline to the Chamber here today, what is the plan, and how do you intend to deliver on what’s required in this category of Housing?”
Ger Murphy, Director of Services for Housing and Social Development told the meeting that Louth County Council’s Housing Department were working actively with Approved Housing Bodies (AHB’S) on acquisitions for four bed units and although the biggest need is in other size properties he was aware that there is still a need and it’s something for them to continue active pursuing.
Councillor Byrne aired caution that this is something she intends to prioritise and advised that it would be something she would be bringing to the next Housing Strategic Policy Committee for review.
