€10,000 for two Louth projects as part of International Decade for People of African Descent Funding

Two Louth projects have received funding under the International Decade for People of African Descent Funding Call to support organisations hosting events to mark the International Decade for People of African Descent and celebrate the diverse culture and heritage of people of African descent.

Ait na nDaoine, a Dundalk based community organisation received €5,000 for a project celebrating the culture and heritage of People of African Descent.

Meanwhile, Phase Innovate who are also based in Louth received €5,000 for a project entitled Miss Tech Africa: Empowering Young Women in Technology and Community Development.

Nationally, The Minister of State for Community Development, Integration and Charities, Joe O’Brien, announced the 35 projects set to receive funding under the International Decade for People of African Descent Funding Call. 

Through this Fund, a total of €169,740 was made available 

Welcoming the announcement, Minister O’Brien said:

“This broad range of events will engage and help enlighten communities across the country about the Decade and its importance.

“It will help to animate the richness of Irish society that is often not fully appreciated but also give a platform to voices that don’t always get space and time to express themselves.”

The UN General Assembly proclaimed an ‘International Decade for People of African Descent’, effective through 2015-2024 under resolution 68/237. 

The resolution proclaims a need to strengthen national, regional and international cooperation in order to encourage the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by People of African Descent. 

The theme of the Decade is “People of African descent: recognition, justice and development”.

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth grant funds the International Decade for People of African Descent Ireland (IDPADI) Steering Committee to advance the celebration of the Decade.
