Dundalk court: Man (22) pleaded guilty to money laundering

A 22-year-old man who allowed his bank account to be used by a third party for the transfer of money, has been given the benefit of the Probation Act at Dundalk district court, after making a €1,000 charitable donation.

Adam Mostyn with an address at Dundoogan, Heynestown, Dundalk had pleaded guilty to two money laundering charges in amounts of €11,309 and €1,000 at Bank of Ireland, Clanbrassil Street, Dundalk, on August 17th  2021.

An earlier sitting of the court had heard that the defendant, who had no previous convictions, had responded to an advertisement on Snapchat and was offered 10% of the proceeds.

A probation report assessed him as being at low risk of reoffending, and the Defence solicitor said on an adjourned date this client worked as a steel fabricator, having lost a job in a pharmaceutical company because of the case.

He stressed that his client never met these people and fortunately, no one was at a loss as Bank of Ireland had stepped in.

The solicitor argued that the defendant had displayed a level of naivety and was never going to gain from this, however Judge

Eirinn McKiernan pointed out he was promised 10%.

The judge put back the case for payment of €1,000 for the Turas Counselling Service, otherwise a two month suspended sentence would be imposed.

However, last Wednesday after the solicitor confirmed the payment had been made, Judge McKiernan applied the Probation Act.
