A large crowd gathered at the Market Square in Dundalk last Saturday 2 September, to watch the 27th Infantry Battalion mark its 50th Anniversary with a parade.
Soldiers from 27th Infantry Battalion departed from the Barrack Street Gate at Aiken Barracks on Saturday morning and marched to the Market Square.
The 27th Infantry Battalion was established by Army Headquarters Operation Order 7 of 1973 to be effective from 01 September of that year and replaced the 1st & 2nd Infantry Groups which were 'ad hoc' military structures formed in the wake of upsurge of violence in Northern Ireland in 1969.
Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Paula Butterly inspected the troops at the Market Square and spoke to the crowd that had gathered.
Lieutenant Colonel Frank Coakley also spoke to the crowd at the Market Square and remembered Private Sean Rooney who was part of the 27th Infantry Battalion.
