Dundalk IT Junior Parkrun is welcoming all children and families to attend their 2nd birthday celebration and 100th Milestone event on Sunday the 20th of August at 9:30am sharp.
Started eventually when Covid restrictions were lifted in 2021, Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, friendly and inclusive event every Sunday morning.
Children between the ages of four and14 years old walk, run, skip, or jump their way around the 2km course and parents/guardians can accompany them.
The aim is to encourage regular activity in a fun way, a spokesperson for Junior Parkrun said.
Each registered child receives a result and over weeks reaches milestones to earn wristbands with the first being a half marathon wristband when they complete 11 Junior Parkruns.
Parkrun is a global organisation which started in Bushy Park, London in 2004 and soon spread across the UK.
It was not until Matt Shields head of Parkrun Ireland brought Parkrun to the Republic of Ireland 2012.
Malahide Parkrun started in November of that year which is a 5km event on Saturday mornings, with Junior Parkrun starting in Rush in 2015.
In Ireland there are now 105 Parkrun’s held on Saturdays, including Dundalk Parkrun and 34 Junior Parkrun’s with many more planned to start in the coming months.
Parkruns can be found all over the world so you only need to register once, and your barcode can be used in any Parkrun worldwide.
Run by a volunteer group with support of parents, grandparents, and other members of the Parkrun community.
Roles are marshals, finish tokens, barcode scanner and tail walker to name a few.
Anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome to join us, the spokesperson said.
Since they began, they have had 414 juniors attend with many attending weekly and 2,971 finishes in total.
Combined they have travelled 5,942kms which from the crow’s fly would take you all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to Little Sugar Creek Greenway Parkrun in Charlotte, North Caroline, America.
